“We should no longer ask what’s wrong with you, but rather, what happened to you?”

Susan’s approach to trauma and the healing process embraces a profound shift in perspective. Instead of focusing on asking individuals what is wrong with them, she believes it is essential to inquire about what they have experienced.

“I had no idea I suffered from trauma until someone shared the definition of trauma being 'anything less than nurturing'.  Then all the pieces began to fall in place and the healing began.”

This newfound understanding led to a significant breakthrough in her own healing journey as the fragments of her past started to interlock, paving the way for transformation and recovery. Susan is a Certified Peer Support Worker, which means she is someone with lived experience who is trained and credentialed by the state to help those struggling with similar issues to navigate recovery.

Her areas of specialty at HeartsWay New Mexico include: Case management and intervention services for individuals and families; facilitating groups; helping clients navigate the behavioral health system.

Get to know Susan: “Drawing upon my personal journey as a woman in sustained recovery from alcohol use disorder, I 'get it' and can engage with profound empathy. Recognizing inherent value and strength within each client, I strive to help them reclaim their own inner resilience and potential.”

Victor acknowledges that the use of Western medicine has shown amazing progress for those who suffer from mental disorders such as trauma and addiction, but the complement of traditional medicine has been shown to have a very powerful impact in many people’s individual treatment  journey.

The traditional healing circle is a holistic addiction treatment for each individual's mind, body, and spirit. It includes Ceremonies, such as smudging, Medicine Songs, and the use of a variety of sacred objects.

His areas of specialty at HeartsWay New Mexico include: The Red Road/Medicine Wheel and  wellbriety groups.

Get to know Victor: “I am the Prayer Holder of the Chitimacha Nation, a Veteran who participated in Desert Storm/Desert Shield and knows the impacts of war, and a survivor of the sinking of the Derrick Lay Barge hit by Hurricane Roxanne. I have a first-hand understanding of trauma and experiencing a road to recovery."

“In exploring the darker aspects of your life, you can uncover where you are out of balance with your soul. This awareness paves the way to integrating all parts of yourself, empowering you to live authentically and in alignment with your true essence.”

“I am a non-traditional therapist and spiritual life coach with over ten years of experience dedicated to supporting adults who are motivated to transform their lives using a psycho-spiritual approach.” Maqueita’s work integrates Yoruba rituals and ceremonies, Universal Laws and Principles, and Metaphysics—“teachings that have profoundly shaped my life and are integral to my own healing journey.”

The psycho-spiritual therapeutic modality asserts that “the soul is the starting point for balance.” This method considers every aspect of who you are—physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and cultural—and examines how your unique lived experiences have impacted your mental health.

Central to Maqueita’s practice is the belief that art-making is a powerful tool for healing. The creative process serves as an “incubator” for exploring the unconscious, providing valuable insights—even in something as simple as scribbling.

Her areas of practice at HeartsWay New Mexico: Art Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, Spiritual Life Coaching, grief, trauma, PTSD, inner child work. Adults 22 and older. BIPOC and/or Queer identifying

Charles believes that we are whole and complete human beings, and that the adventure of life can wear us down and cause us to forget who and what we really are. Restoration to our natural expression of beauty and perfection rests on our ability to remember our spiritual identity, and ignite once again our enthusiasm for living.

“It’s not the traumatic event itself that shapes us most, but rather whether we had supportive relationships to help us process and make sense of it.” ~ Inspired by Dr. Bruce Perry, Dr. Gabor

Kaytea’s approach to healing is integrative, focusing on both the mind and body to help individuals heal and reconnect with their true selves. It's a trauma-informed and empowerment-driven method that combines a body based somatic approach, mindfulness, and a focus on personal growth.

“I’m deeply influenced by the work of Dr. Bruce Perry, a child psychiatrist, Dr. Gabor Maté, renowned for his research on trauma and addiction, and Dr. Stephen Porges, the creator of Polyvagal Theory. Each of them has highlighted the importance of supportive relationships to help us process and make sense of trauma. This is where having a compassionate therapist becomes crucial.”

Kaytea believes that trauma is stored in the body, and while talk therapy is valuable, it can only take us so far. “True healing happens when we integrate all parts of ourselves. Through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS), we can engage with these different aspects of self with greater compassion and awareness, allowing for deeper transformation. By incorporating parts work into therapy, we create space to explore our inner world in a more embodied and holistic way.”

Kaytea embraces the power of group work. Instead of a single reflection, each group member acts as a mirror, creating a “disco ball effect”—scattering light in all directions, illuminating blind spots, and offering new perspectives. This collective energy amplifies healing, making the process even more dynamic and transformative.

Areas of specialty at HeartsWay New Mexico: Anxiety, trauma and (C)PTSD, grief, substance use, LGBTQIA+, IFS/Parts work and inner child work, EMDR, psychodrama, and group work

Get to know Kaytea: “I enjoy being in nature, especially here in New Mexico hiking with my two doggies. I enjoy cooking, baking, spending time with friends, seeing live music and comedy, and travel adventures!

“I believe there is no “fixing” of humans nor the human experience, but there is learning to love oneself and their community to persevere through any hardship.”

Katherine understands that everyone who has been through trauma experiences it at various levels; healing is not the removal, neglect, or absence of trauma as that is not possible, but having the tool to navigate yours and the many experiences of trauma with compassion toward yourself and others. “I believe in taking a non-pathologizing approach to encouraging you toward your most values-aligned life. I utilize liberation-oriented therapy and ground in continuous growth towards a life that feels right for each person. That is how we pave the path forward.”

Kat approaches each client with the belief that there is no singular way to “heal” from trauma; there is only the way that best aligns with each individual’s own values and goals. “The best healing is one that allows you to live an empowered life, ready to overcome obstacles as they arise.”

Kat holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University.

Nina began her studies at the University of New Mexico in photography in the mid 1970s. During that time, she was also interested in psychology, and began attending dream workshops.

“For me, art and psychology were intrinsically connected, and my career has focused on combining these two fields.”

Nina’s approach to healing is multi-faceted, informed by her work in trauma resiliency, which helps calm down the nervous system, decrease anxiety, and increase wellbeing, and depth psychology, which brings unconscious psychological material to a conscious place of knowing.

She understands that trauma needs to be recognized with care, tenderness, and careful attention. Her work with clients attempts to unify and welcome all of the parts of the personality back to the Self—in other words, back to home base.

“Learning to cope and live outside of the trauma definitions is an important aspect of trauma healing.”

Her areas of specialty at HeartsWay New Mexico include: Art Therapy, Sandtray, IFS

“As Desmond Tutu said, we are missing so much by just pulling people out of the river downstream. That is exhausting and ineffective. We need to start upstream and understand why people end up in the river. We have to be creative, intentional, and reach out to stop the falling in much earlier.”

Shari believes it’s time to do things differently in mental health and addiction work. And it begins by listening carefully and respectfully to what is going on in families, in schools, in jails, in our communities. “We have to listen, learn, and be curious about what each person can teach us about resilience, strength, and courage. We have to figure out how to support individuals and families to be the people they want to be, and maybe that involves learning how to break the legacy of trauma, addiction, or absenteeism that some grew up carrying.”

Shari has led clinical teams and medical programs at numerous medical and mental health treatment facilities. She has held various public service posts and been published in numerous medical journals. Her methodology is heavily influenced by Systems Theory,
Cybernetics, Attachment Theory, Psychodynamics, Narrative and Contextual Theories.

But at the core of her work is her heart. “I’ve had the profound privilege to witness human resilience even in the face of some pretty heavy circumstances. And we as practitioners and healers have to continue to learn and understand trauma and what are the most effective and useful ways of healing...because a life can depend on it.”

Her areas of specialty at HeartsWay New Mexico include: Medication management, psychiatric evaluation and treatment; Child, couples, family therapy; EMDR; Emotionally-focused Couples Therapy; Disordered eating

Get to know Shari: “I’m here to help people find or get back to the one wild and precious life they were meant to live. Here at HeartsWay we are on your team and we’re all in it together. We make each other stronger.”

"I like to say ‘the way is through.’ Conditioning, hurtful and limiting experiences, relational problems can become ever repeating cycles of pain, fear, and frustration. Avoiding and defending only trap us more deeply. I have been there myself, and as a therapist I am dedicated to lovingly support people in learning to let go of the old painful shackles , and discover their own essence. Our inborn tendency is toward growing and healing, to explore and express our natural life force. I want to meet you there."

She wants to offer a holistic balance between insight, emotional and somatic well-being, and adaptive behavior to support meaningful growth and healing.
